Caitlin R. Kiernan and Kiini Ibura Salaam, Joint Recipients of the 2012 Tiptree Award

Kiini Ibura Salaam

It’s with a nod to the many diverse readers of Black Gate that I begin with some explanation of who James Tiptree, Jr. was. Science fiction and fantasy veterans will know her well, but many avid readers do not know this important figure in the history of speculative fiction. My referring to Tiptree as a “her” is not a slip; Tiptree was the pen name for Alice Bradley Sheldon, a prominent speculative fiction writer who took on a masculine pseudonym because:

A male name seemed like good camouflage. I had the feeling that a man would slip by less observed. I’ve had too many experiences in my life of being the first woman in some damned occupation.

(That quote is from her profile in the April, 1983 issue of Asimov’s.) She also had a female pseudonym, Raccoona Sheldon, and even won one of her Nebulas with that name.

Caitlyn R. Keirnan

Caitlyn R. Keirnan

Her choice to write under pen names in the first place stemmed from the fact that as Alice Sheldon, she had built up a respectable reputation for herself in academia. She was a military veteran (the U.S. Army Air Forces) and had a doctorate in experimental psychology.

She chose the name Tiptree off a marmalade label and added the “Jr.” at her husband’s suggestion, then with this moniker blazed new trails in the genre, challenging concepts of gender, gender roles, stereotypes, and gender and gendered identity.

I could go on at length about this, but will refer readers interested in more on to Tiptree.org at this point while I move on to the prize she inspired.

Congratulations to the 2012 Tiptree Award Winners and Honorees

The James Tiptree, Jr. Award is “annual literary prize for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender.” (Quote from Illusion and Expectation, a speech given by Pat Murphy at the 1991 WisCon announcing the creation of the Tiptree Award.) This year, two writers share the award: Caitlyn R. Keirnan for her novel, The Drowning Girl, and Kiini Ibura Salaam for her collection of short stories, Ancient, Ancient. Any of you following my posts will know that I interviewed Salaam for Black Gate in January.

tiara1The Tiptree Awards jury chooses, along with the winners, a Tiptree Honors List. This year’s Honors go to: Elizabeth Bear (Range of Ghosts), Roz Kaveney (Rituals), M.J. Locke (Up Against It), Kim Stanley Robinson (2312), Karin Tidbeck (Jagannath), Ankaret Wells (Firebrand), and Lesley Wheeler (The Receptionist in The Receptionist and Other Tales).

Winners of the Tiptree Award receive a cash prize of ,000.00, and a trip to WisCon for the award ceremony. They also get to wear the Tiptree Tiara, which was made by jeweler and writer, Elise Mattheson, and traditionally the winner wears it for the duration of the Con. (I do not know the protocol when there are two winners, but Salaam expressed reservations about it working with her hair the way it’s currently styled.)

Congratulations to the winners and honorees!

Gerry Anderson, April 14, 1929 – December 26, 2012

Posted in Fantasy Literature on January 7th, 2013 by Admin

Space 1999I read on Tor.com that television writer, producer and supermarionation pioneer Gerry Anderson died last week.

His name may not mean much to modern audiences, but Gerry Anderson was beloved among science fiction fans of the 1960s-1980s — and boy, did we love him. He had a long and fruitful career, especially with science fiction-themed children’s shows such as Fireball XL5 (1962), Stingray (1964–65), Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968), Joe 90, and his biggest success, Thunderbirds (1965-1966).

Most of Anderson’s TV shows were co-produced with his wife, Sylvia Anderson. They were married from 1960 to 1981. Sylvia frequently directed the overdub sessions for the supermarionation programs, and even provided the voices of many characters, including Lady Penelope of the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds may have been his biggest success — and the defining kid’s show for an entire generation of science fiction fans — but there was nothing that could get my young heart rate up like the opening credits for Joe 90.

Gerry’s television career culminated in Space: 1999, the groundbreaking science-fiction television series that was the last Gerry and Sylvia Anderson co-production, and the most expensive series produced for British television up to that time. It ran for two seasons, from 1975 to 1977, and starred Martin Landau, the painfully wooden Barbara Bain, Barry Morse, and (in season two) Catherine Schell as Maya, the shape-changing alien hottie.

While it had an original premise and showcased enough intriguing plotlines to captivate its teenage fans, Space: 1999 is primarily remembered today for the superb results of effects artist Brian Johnson, whose detailed model work was hugely influential on Alien and other films that decade. His work was so impressive that George Lucas visited Johnson during production and offered him the role of effects supervisor for Star Wars. He later received an Academy Award for his work on The Empire Strikes Back.

Gerry Anderson continued to work well into the last decade; his New Captain Scarlet premiered in the UK in February 2005, and was said to be the most expensive children’s programme ever made in the UK. He died peacefully in his sleep on December 26, 2012 at the age of 83.

Favorite Graphic Novels of 2012

Posted in Pop Literature on December 8th, 2012 by Admin

These are the six graphic novels I have most recommended to friends, family, and anyone else who has crossed my path this year.

All links go to the authors’ contributions to the Book Notes series or the book’s page at Amazon. I have reposted my original review below each book where applicable.

What was your favorite graphic novel of 2012?

Building Stories by Chris Ware

Not only the graphic novel of the year, possibly the book of 2012.

Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony and Rodrigo Corral

Chopsticks is a breathtaking YA novel, a groundbreaking exercise in visual storytelling. The book tells its tales through illustrations and photos, while the app and online components add videos and music. Both the printed and digital offerings serve up an extremely intimate peek at two young people’s relationship.

Goliath by Tom Gauld

Tom Gauld’s graphic novel Goliath is a spare, stripped-down telling of the classic Bible story from the giant’s perspective. Gauld leverages the power of comics with many captionless panels to perfectly pace this story, one that turns from a heralding tale of victory to epic tragedy when told from another point of view.

Jinchalo by Matthew Forsythe

Matthew Forsythe’s graphic novel Jinchalo features only a handful of words on its 120 pages, but its pen-and-ink drawings evoke the spirit of their Korean folk tale roots with a vibrance that leaps off the page. Simple for a toddler to read, engaging for an adult, this is as much delightful storytelling as whimsical exercise for the imagination.

Tina’s Mouth: An Existential Comic Diary by Keshni Kashyap

Keshni Kashyap’s graphic novel Tina’s Mouth is aptly subtitled “An Existential Comic Diary.” Written in the form of a school-assigned diary written to philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, the book follows a sophomore in high school through the ups and downs typical of the teenage years, but with the additional conflict that comes with being the progeny of immigrants to this country. Kashyap’s Tina is relatable yet unique, a protagonist who grabs the attention of both teen and adult readers.

The book is more illustrated novel than graphic novel, and Mari Araki’s simple yet elegant illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to Kashyap’s prose.

Tina’s Mouth is the rare book I didn’t want to end, and is a graphic novel I have tirelessly recommended to friends and family of all ages.

Unterzakhn by Leela Corman

Originally serialized at The Jewish Daily Forward, Leela Corman’s graphic novel Unterzakhn follows the lives of two sisters, Russian Jewish immigrants in New York City’s Lower East Side. Set in the early 1900s, Corman captures both her characters and the era elegantly and expressively with her pen and ink artwork, and the sisters’ story is captivating, informative, and moving as they move along their divergent paths.

Favorite Short Story Collections of 2012

Posted in Pop Literature on December 5th, 2012 by Admin

These are the short fiction collections I have recommended most to blog readers, friends, and family throughout the year.

All links go to the authors’ contributions to the Book Notes series if appropriate. I have reposted my original review below each book.

What was your favorite short story collection of 2012?

Battleborn

Battleborn by Claire Vaye Watkins

In her debut short story collection Battleborn Claire Vaye Watkins marries character to landscape as well as anyone I have read in years. These stories set in the Nevada desert are gritty and brilliant, and foretell an auspicious literary future for their author.

Birds of a Lesser Paradise

Birds of a Lesser Paradise by Megan Mayhew Bergman

Megan Mayhew Bergman’s Birds of a Lesser Paradise is a stellar debut, a collection of stories notable for the empathetic portrayals of its characters (both human and animal) as well as the resiliency of the women portrayed.

The Odditorium

The Odditorium by Melissa Pritchard

Melissa Pritchard’s new short fiction collection The Odditorium contains eight ambitious and fantastic stories that transcend genre while fascinating with their language and historical figures brought to life.

Safe as Houses

Safe as Houses by Marie-Helene Bertino

The Iowa Short Fiction Award has introduced me to many talented short story writers over the years, and one of the most impressive is Marie-Helene Bertino. Her debut collection Safe as Houses is brilliantly inventive and surreal, with each of its stories original and filled with dark humor.

Understories

Understories by Tim Horvath

The stories in Understories are clever and imaginative, and have earned Tim Horvath comparisons to Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, and Kevin Brockmeier. This stunning collection revels in wordplay and inventiveness, and is one of the finest short fiction collections I have read all year.

Brian Evenson

Windeye by Brian Evenson

With his latest short fiction collection Windeye, Brian Evenson once again proves himself a master at creating suspenseful, literary horror.
